Beethoven builds an entire movement on 4 notes, 3 short and 1 long, tossing them between strings and winds and never letting go. The symphony premiered in Vienna in December 1808. The piano reduction behind this file comes from Augener's edition: the whole orchestra folded into your 10 fingers, which is exactly what makes it demanding.

You've probably heard that the opening is fate knocking at the door. That line comes from Anton Schindler, Beethoven's secretary and a notoriously unreliable witness. At the piano, the real job lies elsewhere: turn orchestral unisons into octaves, hold an Allegro con brio pulse without hardening the sound, and follow the motif when it slips into the left hand. The E-flat major second theme finally lets you breathe.
