Challenges and exercises

A piano challenge every day, and a league to keep you practising

Every day, Pianovera hands you a short excerpt to play at 3 levels, with 3 attempts and a score based on accuracy. A weekly challenge counts triple, and your points place you in a practice league against simulated opponents, from Bronze to Diamond. Next to it, generated piano exercises, scales, chords, arpeggios and Hanon, so you can work on technique without hunting for sheet music.

The daily challenge and the weekly challenge

The daily challenge is an excerpt of a few bars, taken from the course repertoire or the library: a phrase of “Ode to Joy”, a passage from a Gymnopédie, a left-hand pattern. The same excerpt exists at three levels. On Easy, the right hand alone in C position, with key names shown and the key to play lit up. On Medium, both hands or eighth notes, helpers still on. On Hard, faster, with no key names and no lit key: the score alone, like on a real piano.

You get 3 attempts, and only the best one counts. Scoring follows a single rule: accuracy, as the percentage of right notes at the right time, multiplied by the level’s coefficient. On equal points, the number of mistakes breaks the tie. The weekly challenge is longer, keeps the same rule with a coefficient of 3, and stays open all week.

Easy

Right hand

C position, key names and the key to play lit up.

×1
Medium

Both hands or eighth notes

Helpers stay on, the rhythm gets trickier.

×1.5
Hard

No help, faster

No key names, no lit key: the score alone.

×2
Weekly

The long one

Open all week, 3 attempts, the same rule with a big coefficient.

×3
One token a day. Your first completed challenge of the day earns a token. That token opens a lesson from the course after the first 10, which are already free: one more lesson a day for anyone who practises.

The practice league: from Bronze to Diamond

Your points for the week place you in a practice league. The opponents are simulated by the app: the league is there to practise and to see where you stand. On Sunday night, the top 10 move up, the bottom 5 move down, everyone else stays. 5 tiers follow one another, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, and the league lives on the Challenges screen with your position, your points and the gap to the next opponent. The nickname is generated by the app and can be changed in Profile: the league needs no account and no email, and no personal data leaves the device.

🥉 Bronze🥈 Silver🥇 Gold💠 Platinum💎 Diamond

A league isn’t there to humble you; it’s there to bring you back tomorrow. An Easy challenge played cleanly is worth more than a Hard one butchered, and a regular player climbs even without playing fast. It’s the opposite of a rhythm game where only speed counts.

The exercises: scales, chords, arpeggios and Hanon

The Exercises screen generates what a piano teacher would write by hand in a notebook. Piano scales in every key, major and minor, over one or two octaves, with the thumb-under marked. Piano chords for beginners, in root position then inverted, left hand, right hand or both. Arpeggios, and the Hanon exercises that loosen up the fingers. Every exercise can be worked in Wait mode, note after note, or at tempo with a score, and shows the fingering on every key.

The result is a complete piano practice routine: 5 minutes of exercises, the daily challenge, then a lesson or a piece from the library with the falling notes. On Windows it all works with a MIDI keyboard or the mouse; on Android, with a finger on the touch keyboard.

Today’s challenge is waiting. Free on Windows and on Android, with no time limit.
