After the storm of the first movement and the calm of the second, Beethoven closes the Pathétique with a Rondo whose theme sounds suspiciously like the Adagio's tune, sped up and turned minor. Coincidence? Musicologists still argue; compare the MIDI files yourself, all three movements are in our library.
Of the three movements it's the most approachable: less raw virtuosity than the first, more motion than the second. The theme returns four times, so every passage you learn pays you back immediately. The sixteenth-note episodes between refrains are the real work, and the coda asks for a little nerve.
What you'll be working on
- The rondo theme, singing even at a lively tempo
- The running episodes between refrains
- The triplets of the central A-flat section
- A clean coda that doesn't collapse at the finish
