Mozart logged it in his own catalogue as "a little sonata for beginners", and teachers have taken him at his word ever since: its MIDI is an absolute staple of early piano years. Concert pianists smile at that: everything in this piece is exposed. One uneven scale, one lumpy Alberti bass, and the illusion of easiness collapses on stage.
It's the laboratory of Classical style: Alberti bass in the left hand, scales running both directions, crisp ornaments. We recommend it to anyone a year or two in, not because it's easy but because it teaches cleanly everything the Classical repertoire will keep asking for.
What you'll be working on
- Alberti bass: even, discreet, no thumb accent
- Equal scales in both directions (thumb crossings again)
- Mozartian trills and grace notes, short and clear
- Sharp articulation with very little pedal
