For two and a half centuries everyone credited Bach: the piece sits in his wife Anna Magdalena's music notebook. Scholars settled it in the 1970s, the author is Christian Petzold, organist in Dresden. It changed nothing. This minuet remains the doorway into Baroque music, and its MIDI the first download of countless piano beginners.
Its strength is clarity. A melody climbing cheerfully up the G major scale, a bass that walks in counterpoint, two repeated halves and out in 41 seconds. It concentrates everything a first piece should teach: phrasing, balance between the hands, and a few optional ornaments once you feel playful.
