A musette, in the eighteenth century, was a small parlor bagpipe. This piece from Anna Magdalena's notebook imitates its drone with leaping octaves in the bass and a melody skipping on top, barefoot in the grass. Twenty seconds of pure good mood: the smallest MIDI file in our library, and probably the most-played anonymous piece in piano history.
It's the dream piece for learning staccato and quick left-hand jumps without any fuss: the form is tiny, the rhythm is square, the payoff is instant. Plenty of students memorize it by accident in the first week.
What you'll be working on
- The bass octave leaps, precise and bouncy
- A light staccato that evokes the bagpipe
- The echo phrase of the middle section
- Keeping the dance character from first note to last
